Brick Hearth

1665 Views 6 Replies 4 Participants Last post by  CJKarl
Hi, I have taken down a chimney from a old house and am wanting to use these same bricks to make a fireplace hearth for a free standing wood stove.
Have never really done much masonry work, am I mixing mortar to hold these together or might there be a better product for the possible small pieces around the edges ? (design still under way)

Also how might be the best way to remove the remaining old mortar that cant be chipped off.

Thanks

Mortar to lay the bricks. Acid, stiff brush, rubber gloves and safety glasses to clean used brick.

If the mortar is on the bottom or a face that will not be seen you can use a 4" grinder with a diamond blade.

If the mortar does not just drop off the brick with a blunt pop of a brick hammer throw the brick in the trash pile and move on to the next one.

I started that process this evening and now understand what your saying about tossing the stubborn ones aside

Thanks

Yeah, that too.
Yeah, that too.

But if you really need to use them to match something....grinder.
