I currently use a set of Bluetooth headphones(iso free) as my ear protection. They are a standard set of Bluetooth earbuds with hearing protection. I'm curious if there is a better option for me.
I'm a self employed commercial carpenter that subs on many sites close to or during the finishing stages. I'm also autistic and my mind processes all the sounds at the workplace. When I'm getting tired I become sensitive to the multitude of different sounds. I sometimes use my current ear protection to lesson the number of sounds I hear either by the simple dampening effect from earplugs or by playing bit of music so I just have one audio input(because I really don't care how the electrician's fantasy hockey team is doing).
I originally avoided the noise canceling earbud option, which will probably work better from an Autism perspective, because I was concerned about being told I wasn't able to use them on some sites for safety reasons. An example of this might be failing to hear a scissor lift beep signaling it was moving. Another might be someone communicating something important to you, "Don't step back, passing behind you" ect.
But, features on workplace rated noise canceling earbuds have really exploded over the last couple years and that might make them the best option now. Things an "aware" mode that lets voices through but not sound might do the trick.
If you use noise canceling earbuds what features should I be looking for/avoid from a safety perspective? And which features would you suggest to help deal with my health issues?
