That is absolutely 100% wrong. You can bend lumber anyway you want if you take the time to learn. Even exotics. To bend on edge the forms and compression straps have to have about 20% overage of radius to compensate for spring back.

However he said he didn't want to build a steam box and forms as contraptions so, rrk nailed it. General rule is twice as wide as thick for each cut for lamination. I.e. if it's a 5/4x6 trim board, you would end up with 5 cuts at 1/2" each. Could run it through a table saw and get a better lamination.

Anytime I do anything with curves all mechanical fasteners are viewed as temporary connections. They will eventually crack and split connections if it's not just to hold the joint until glue joints are set up.
you “bend” a 12“ radius in the crown of a cedar 1X4 for a full 180 degree half circle wise guy. I’ll wait for the pictures.
