Looking for the best way to finish a basement window. I guess it would matter if its a glass panel window or a glass block window but I'll leave it open for now. I'm talking about framing a 2x4 wall inside the foundation wall and finishing that with drywall. That leaves a small gap between the framing and the foundation wall, then you have a couple more inches until you get to the window itself.

In the past I've used 1x material to box around the window, kind of an oversized extension jamb, then caulked where the wood meets the concrete block/mortar/glass (take your pick). I've also drywalled up to the same locations and finished the back edge with caulk.

I started tiling my window extensions, but I honestly don't remember what I did in the bsmt the last time.

I don't think I took into account any potential for movement between the framed wall and the concrete wall. I think I built the framed wall up to within a 1/2" of being flush with the concrete, then put tile backer on the framed wall and laid tile from window to sheetrock.

I do remember it took almost a full 12" tile.

Anyway, that has held up for several years now, so I don't see a problem.

I used to use 1/4" plywood. Its easy to cut and when painted looks just fine. You can cover the sides and the "sill" area with it for little or no expense. I had the cheapest punch-out guy in the world. He would go behind the vinyl flooring guys and pick up their plywood scraps to use for the basement windows. I miss that guy.

Was one of my first thoughts....checked the dates to see if this was an old thread.:thumbsup: I like the detail, but haven't used it yet.

OP...we use 1/2"ac ply as extension jambs...caulk and paint the ply edges.

not sure what the window is or of this will work for you but i like using pre-primed pine ripped flush with your finished drywall and caulked into the window. then trim the window out with the same casing you use on your door jambs.
