Bad 4" Can Thermocouples??

1744 Views 5 Replies 4 Participants Last post by  480sparky
I recently just got a slew of calls from 4" cans (IC rated) we put in 2-4 yrs ago with thermocouples built in. Not sure what it is but they are nothing but trouble from what I"ve seen. They either trap too much heat, the thermocouples are crap and just going bad?? Has there been a recall on 4" cans anyone knows about or is anyone else having more than normal calls about blinking cans installed from a while back?? For now I"m going to go and try to excavate any excessive insulation above them and put some socket extenders in and see if that works first.

Check the lamp & trim combo. Many cans have a wattage limit for one type of trim, and a difference wattage limit for another type of trim.
Trim

We ruled that out. They are all trims made for that can. I was on phone with tech guy a bunch last year talking about the can/trim combination. Only 1 light currently is kicking out of 6. It's actually under the wattage rating as well. I could just go and take it out and replace, but I'd rather get to the cause of it since it has been happening way over normal compared to 6" can w/thermo and even the 3" cans are not having these problems either.
Time for a dimmer.:w00t:

Nothing I've heard or seen, out of at least a couple of hundred over the last few years. Though I have to admit, I find the 4" cans to be a PITA, and try to steer people toward the larger sizes when I can.
Being they, like everything else, are mass-produced, you may simply have the 'Friday 4:55' model.
