Anyone using a netbook out in the Field?

5399 Views 45 Replies 11 Participants Last post by  rbsremodeling
Wazzup guys. I use a netbook out in the field to check email, keep the biz on track, send invoices, play on the interweb, etc. This small computer works great on the 3G network--almost as fast as DSL Cable.

Who else uses a computer out in the field? What are the pluses and minuses.

Please S.O.T., or I'll report your post.

I use my dell mini 9 all the time. I bluetooth it to my phone and have internet access everywhere. I take it on appointments and take notes on it. It has a slideshow of projects and I can do estimates, change orders, and just about anything on it. I also have a printer in the truck so I really can do just about anything in the field.
I've seen them in the store and the screens look a bit small to me unless you really bump up that resolution. Besides the email and internet browsing... what other apps are you guys using on these?
I posted pics of mine puter. I use email, web and my Business software is web based so I have access to everything. Estimating, contracts, documents, pic and specs etc. It is also a tablet pc so i keep all my notes on it as well

Where are these pics at Rory? I'm about ready to upgrade from the Tough-Book and have been curious about the Dell tablets ever since MOTB told me about them......back then they had a lot of bugs to work out and where not ready yet though.

Thanks

I use a HP 17" laptop, and I like it fine. I like the fact that I can get most of my paperwork done on the road, and not at home when I should be with the family. I bought the cheapest 17" could find which came with a free cheapo printer. It's life expectancy is short, had it for a year and already showing signs of age. I think it has to do with the vibration on the road. It's disposable AFAIC.

you can pick up 2 year old Highway Patrol trade-ins for $500-$1,000 - thats where my CF-29 came from. Actually I took mine straight out of the car while the patrolman was in Dunkin-D ........... figured it was time to trade his in a little early.
