Hey Guys, A contractor I know is looking to downsize. This means he is selling his 03 Silverado 2500 HD Crewcab with full size box. It currently has 215k on it.

How strong is the Allison transmission? I have always heard they are better but how much better? It is the 8.1 Liter Gas engine.

As Robert said the 8.1 sucks on fuel. His mileage is actually pretty good. The allison 1000 is a really good tranny. They only last so long though. The best advice for you is if you buy it check for the transfer case rub. If it hasn't rubbed through yet you are probably ok. If your tranny acts up take it to the shop immediately. The allison wears like anything else but if you catch a problem early it can be a very low cost repair. If the tranny roaches it is quite a bit more expensive to rebuild than a 700r4.
