Alcoa leaf relief

10987 Views 23 Replies 8 Participants Last post by  JoeTheRoofer
Has anyone ever installed Alcoa leaf relief guards on existing 5" Alcoa gutters with roof hangers that stick up above the gutter? I would like to try Alcoa's system on my shop, but I dont want to take the existing gutters down or remove the present hangers. The flat perforated metal sections that I saw on the web wont be able to sit flush due to the roof brackets.

If someone has done the install over existing hangers I would appreciate the necessary Alcoa part numbers and a few pictures would be great.

Thanks for the help!

With that stuff (which dosent work very well) u will have to cut around each roof hanger.

If you can find a solid cover and the roof hangers are under the shingles(like they should be) you dont have to change anything.

But that leaf relief is probably as good as those foam brushs that go in the gutter which would be a lot easier to install.

Try egutter.com?
why do you have to cut around the hangers?

i have it on my house works great, no notching

Leaf Relief Retro Fit 5" is what you need, make sure you get RETRO FIT. No need to notch if you have hidden hangers or spikes.....now if you have straps that's another topic. It works good for me

Just to be clear I have Alcoa strap hangers that are attached with two roofing nails driven directly into the sheathing. Can I change these hangers to a different style without removing the entire gutter and then use the leaf relief retro TP5300? I never liked the look of the strap hangers. Whats the best hanger to use? I think I have 2x6 fascia boards behind the gutters.
I use "Hang-Tite" from Ray-Tec Manufacturing.

Very strong hangers.

Sorry, no website link available for them.

They sell all sorts of gutter accessories and flashings too.

Take the gutters down, take off the hangers, and install (new install) leaf relief on the gutter and re-hang. With the new install leaf relief you dont use a bracket you just screw through the back edge of the guard.
i thought you didnt like that detail Patrick?

I dont... I absolutely hate it. My installers hate it. My Alcoa rep doesn't even mention the word leaf relief with me ever.

The only time we sell it is if the customer begs for it, and we charge dearly for it

We make our own guard and it installs and works a lot better

Did you use the "retro fit" or the "new" system? If Retro which hangers?

I have some Hangtite No Clip samples coming my way. I hope they will work with the Alcoa "roof apron" (drip edge/rear hanger)I don't know it's a good idea to screw through the roof apron then into the gutter. I hate the strap hangers, when I remove them what kind of sealer should I use to repair the nail holes?
Update

Update: I talked with the Alcoa rep and explained my situation and here’s what he said. Your gutters are 5” using a “fascia apron” that the rear portion of your gutter hooks into, and the front of the gutter is supported by a strap hanger (#OG111). With this gutter system you need TP5300 retro. To install Leaf Relief on existing gutters you cut and remove the strap hangers and replace them with Leaf Relief hanger #OG13LR5.

These special hangers will cost me $1.58 each. I asked him if I could use a hanger like the Hangtite hidden hanger ($.15 each) and he said YES, BUT I would be eliminating the ability for the system to float because the hanger screw would go through the fascia apron and the gutter. Do you experts see this as a potential problem? I don’t mind using the Leaf Relief hangers, but I’m concerned about their strength because they hook onto the front of the gutter and just slide up behind the apron. No fasteners are used with the Leaf Relief hangers.

how old are your gutters? Might be cheaper and easier just to run new gutters and guards that's usually what we do. It takes too much time to mess around with the old stuff.

Those aprons suck when it comes time to remove the gutters though, and absolute ***** getting the gutter off.
Gutters are 4 years old. I got a couple of the special Leaf Relief hangers(OG13LR5) to test this afternoon and they don't stay in between the fascia apron and the gutter. I think that they might have held tight if the original installers would have engaged the apron for the entire 35'span. I suspect that they left it disengaged to get the proper pitch to the down spout on the opposite end. I would never trust the OG13LR5 hangers.

I received the Raytec samples today also and the hangtite no clip will work, but the fastener screw will go through the apron. Do you think this will be okay if I use a screw with a sealing washer? I'm no longer concerned about the gutters floating since I found out that the apron is not engaged.
Unless your gutter run in one continuous length is very exterme, I would not worry about the "Floating Aspect" of their system, but that is their rationalization to sell a different style product, dependant upon a hidden cleat hanger, rather than screws.

Yes, if you have the option to get gasketed wood-tec screws, use those instead on nails, even the really good gutter screw shank style nails, because you hill have superior holding power.

The problem that many homw owners experience with the Alcoa Hanging and Floating System, is precisely what you already stated, which is the apron hanger does not accomodate for an increasing pitch in the gutter trough system.

When I remove the strap hangers what's the best sealer/adhesive to seal the holes and bond the tabs back down?

Thanks to everyone that gave their expert opinions!
