I put an ad on CL. Maybe I'm being too critical, I would say at least 25% have responded using their girlfriends email. I know, I know....it's CraigsList. What did I expect?

What would your gut feeling be about this? What does this say to you when it says you have email from Amanda?

I personally say trash bin, but maybe I'm missing the big picture. It says to me that you are so lazy that you cannot even muster up energy to use a Yahoo account, let alone get yer butt out of that cozy bed with your woman.

I get a lot of "tire kickers" from CL. I have however got a couple of nice jobs from there. Most of the time though its someone that's wanting "how much". I never quote! either over the 'net or the phone.

Now and then someone responds with "attitude" ie: I can have this done for $$$ can you beat that? I don't even respond. all kinds of people out there! I won't compete at the bottom of the barrel.

Newspaper advertising is/was costing me $420/month - too much, so I cut it out. I have been getting more jobs from referrals and CL/Kijiji.

I have hired some good helpers from CL, you do have to weed thru them tho.

I too found some using their girlfriend's or wife's email account, probably had them type it out too. I guess there are some guys out there that are not internet savy. I did not trashbin them because of it.

Bet they can find the porno :shifty:

Seriously though deckman, we're not asking them to write html code. But having an email account is a basic means of communicating these days.

It's been thirty years since Al Gore invented the internet. This is not new technology.

I agree with you Framer....if they are too lazy to get a Yahoo or Hotmail account...doesn't show much ambition.

I did that once and Googled some of the chick's email addresses. One email address came back to discussion boards about her husband's (I'm assuming he is the contractor) porn addiction. Apparently he goes to work then locks himself in the computer and ....well....amuses himself with porn all night while she cares for the 7 kids. Kind of scary.

I put ads up on craigslist looking for employee's too and a bunch of the guys used their girfriends email as well, I figured it was the guys GF responding to the ad trying to get their lazy BF a job.

I usually don't respond to them either.

I find I'll get exactly the same reponse from craigs list as the local paper except it doesn't cost $225.00. I don't care if they use their wifes/girlfriends e-mail. Its a numbers game and you must weed thru 50 or more to set 1 or two interviews. We're hiring tradespeople not computer geeks, show me your tools. Interestingly when I've been sent photos of completed work they usually sink themselves as you can tell alot, dirty jobsites, poor workmanship, etc

You're getting an email "from" Amanda because Amanda sent the email. She's tried of seeing her lazy, good for nothing baby daddy sitting in the garage all day with his buddies swilling 40's, not taking out the trash and spending all her tip money on cigarettes, and has taken it upon herself to help him find work.

It is all about how someone presents themselves. That can be either online or in-person and first impressions count.

If someone is applying for a job (I assume the OP was posting a job advertisement), it is to their benefit to put their best foot forward. Some hiring managers may not care, but a good number would care if you applied for a job using someone elses email account.

If someone was in need of work, why would they not do everything they could to make a good first impression.

I put a help wanted ad into CL for the first time last week. One was for a carpenter, the other for a laborer. I thought the same thing, a lot of the responders had their wife's or mom's e-mail.

Other thing I ran into was the number of laid-off union workers, looking for under the table work. That kinda rips me a bit. Guys on disability piss me off too, but they aren't dumb enough to advertise the fact on the initial reply... most anyway.

Guess I'll find out about the Disability and Child Support guys, when I write the first check to them . Wow, maybe I should commend the Union guys for being honest:shifty:, and not wasting eachother's time.

I sometimes ads up on the college job board (small private college) often get female responses, even for hard labor. I hired one once for roofing, she did okay, just the problem was that she couldn't carry a bundle of shingles around.

I've had all these same results(girlfriends /wives emails, laid off union guys).
I will say this. I just hired a carpenter who responded with his wifes email.
So far (its been a week) the guy is awsome. Early everyday, doesn't BS all day. And knows his *****!

Some of these guys are not to into computers or the internet. They are out of work, the wife shows the how to look for jobs, and they use her email, because they have no idea how to set up a free one. A lot of guys out there don't sit on the comp all night reading CT like us :w00t:.

I have 3 guys now. The new guy, the kid who...well he gets emails on his phone, and another guy who doesn't own a computer or a tv.

Framerman - I'm in the same situation as you. I just recently let go of my low man (now having a need for a laborer/carpenter helper). Put an ad on CL and the junk I have to weed through is ridiculous.

I personally don't discount replies coming from a wife/girlfriend's email, because if you reply back with some questions, you will quickly be able to tell if it is the guy or his significant other responding.

Are you looking for help anywhere else?

I have done all of the above.
How many guys did you get asking if they would get paid after every day? Come on, that is your first question, really. I must have had 50 emails within 2 weeks when I put my ad on CL. Most of the respondents were idiots.
I did find 2 really good guys through it though.

I figure if they know enough to get on craigslist, they are probably one step ahead of someone who doesn't. I also get about 100 e-mails per job posted. Sometimes I get the same contractors responding for subbing as I do for a $10 an hour laborer job.

I only use CL for fun and entertainment and for selling the odd tool now and then. One thing I've noticed, is if I put my phone # on the ad, I usually get a price inquiry within hours of the item I'm selling and usually sell the item that day. If I only leave the e-mail through CL, I have to weed through 5-10 spam replies and never sell squat. Just tire kickers.

A lot of guys in the 40 and up age group don't utilize their computers a lot and I personally wouldn't want someone super computer savy replying for a job. What the heck you doing on the internet? Shouldn't you be trying to find a job?;)
