i was thinking on trying a small project. what do you use to cut these timbers with. i need some nice straight cuts, so a chainsaw is out. will a chopsaw or radial arm be big enough to cut the logs?

12" radial arm should take care of that.
I suggest the Makita 16 inch circulars saw. Its what we use on our logs which are about 7 1/2 x 10 in square (roughly).
