Permit office is more than likely going to want engineering anyway, so might as well get it engineered.

Lumberyard might be able to spec it as well, but your Building Dept might not accept that.

 

lumberyard has no idea. And for permits yeah definitely will need an engineer but I need to estimate this first to even see if he wants to do it but having difficulty without what materials will be needed even on average

 

Agree with Seven on this, more than likely going to need a Glulam beam.

 

Your probably going to end up with a 4ply at that span.

 

IMO 3.5 or 5.5 by whatever height glulam would work the best.

 

Sounds like the best option but the longest glulam I’m finding is 18’. Where do you guys source your glulams from? Our lumberyard doesn’t seem to have them

Can you cantilever the beam 2' both sides to reduce span to 24'?

We used their 2x6 box steel joists to span 8' with their doubled up 2x11 actual dimensions box beam for a total span of around 19' with two posts. We hangered the joists to increase overall presentation and head height.

I don't think Fortress has what you need, but gives you an idea what steel can do.

Pretty much assembled with black self tapping tech screws.

Gluelams of that size probably need to come from the wholesaler as special order.

You can get a glulam or LVL any size you want.

Around here they come from Weyerhauser or Boise Cascade

Lumberyard orders them for me. They are all custom ordered based on the engineering.

42’ L x 16” D x 8 3/4” W.

2 8x8 posts at 14’ OC in the basement.

Footings for the posts was 5’x5’x 16” deep.

Beam holds exterior walls for 2 stories above. 👍

Weighed many hundreds of pounds.

 

Here our yards , not HD, stock common size ones. Believe the buy 40' ones and cut to the size you want.

Www Boise Cascade, Weyerhaeuser or LpCorp LVL software. Not too hard to get close. A builder yard does the same thing and should be glad to help.

 

I ordered a 52' ridge once. (1 3/4" x 9 1/2" LVL) It wasn't structural. I just wanted the longest straight single ridge possible. The length was max for the delivery tractor trailer rig.

I've encountered customers who are wishing for something like your client is asking. I'll usually provide an off the cuff estimate to see how serious they are. It may add $6-$10k to achieve that large of an open span after it's all said and done-usually the dreamers will opt out and the serious ones will continue.

Campers and some homes have wind forecast automatic roll up.... lot smaller beam and posts.

brace cables to posts/ beams , a tension cable on the cross beam could zero out most of the deflection of the dead loads

Cantilevering the beam's post mounts, 4-6 foot at each end would cheapen it up Quite a bit. Thus only a 16-20 clear span.

If there is a roof overhang, a gap at the house end of the tarp would lower wind uplift a little.....

 

A couple of years ago I did a garage that previous home over took out the middle 4”x4” support on 2 - 2x12 sandwiched boards 26 feet long. This was the main middle beam supporting the garage ceiling and roof. New owner called me in and at that time it had 2 1/2” of deflection in the middle!!! New owner did not want a post installed in the middle of the floor. I replaced with 4 - 1 3/4” x 11 1/2” x 26 foot long LVL beams. I bolted all 4 together with 2 bolts every 2 feet . After raising roof and installing the 4 beams, I had 1/4 to 1/8 inch of deflection. Hind sight being 20/20, I wish I would have just used a steel I beam.

Using 4 layers … were you able to install them one at a time easier than a single steel beam?

 

Yes, that is the way I had to do them because I couldn’t get it in the garage and swing it into place. I had to bring them in a window that was very close and get them in place 1 at a time. A full steel beam would have been more difficult and I couldn’t have done it alone like I did.
