When the installer cut a hole in the roof for the VELUX skylight and put it in but did not flash it yet I've noticed that the top end of the opening had about 2 inch gap between the edge of the opening and the edge of the skylight. Is this normal? Do you usually cut a hole 2-3-4 inches longer than the skylight?

2 inch hole in the ply/roof sheathing?

If so, no not normal. It's a half a$$ way to do things, but he could just put a 2x in there.

The last time I set a Velux to the top flash was a fixed flash. Just food for thought.

Seen it often when following the carpenters. It won't cause a leak though, it flashed correctly. As a matter of fact, I recall that lower piece of Velux framing is sometimes not flush, at bottom edge, with side pieces. That can make a 1" gap look large.
It's not cause for concern. Frank
PS want to see a gap? Look around chimney, Code in Va. calls for 4" gap.
