1x4 composite?

14591 Views 31 Replies 10 Participants Last post by  CITY DECKS INC
Does anyone make a 1x4 that isn't T&G for porches? Tamko Evergrain used to make one and I haven't used it in year, but I went searching for it and its not on their site anymore. A customer wants to replace rotted fir and more fir and I want to give them more options as I don't like installing something I know will have to be replaced in 20 years or less again. Thank you

never seen it.. only 1x6
Tigerwood has 1x4s. If you want man made, how about just ripping the tongues of Azek porch board?
Eric, I would love to but its over 800sq ft. I wouldn't feel right charging them the cost of the porch boards and then the labor and price of a new blade to rip all those. I appreciate the response though. Where are you from? I am just over the CT border of 395 in MA
Most any of the South American suppliers sell 1x4s

Contracting is not a feel good thing, it's a business. If the Wallet will go with Eric's idea it sounds like a good one to me far as man made goes.

That's why we do "custom", if you want something truly custom then you pay more for it.

I am in business to make people happy and make a living, not to charge people for things I consider over priced or unnecessary. If I just wanted to do the job, collect a check and leave, I would just replace the wood they have now with the same product that they requested and not offer any alternatives.

I am all for cu$tom, but they just wanted their standard decking replaced. I am just trying to find them a better alternative if possible to help them avoid replacing it again in the future

20 miles east of Hartford.
It is possible with a screen name like that there are those who would not perceive an over all understanding of the Work.

But now it seems your question has not be resolved in a respected manor. Ipe, Garapa ,Masenranduba will serve you for a very long lasting floor installed correctly. 1x4s can be had with all species .

I buy from East Teak, George is my contact, 800 338 5636.

Welcome to the Site.

By the time you factor in maintenance it'll be cheaper to rip the composite than to go with wood.
Left to go without finish SA lumber will go to a silver gray.

Finish is cosmetic with no effect one way or the other on life span.

If you want it to be gray then that would probably be a good option. I find most people think that the way it looked on the day off installation is the way it'll look for a long time, thus my reason for using capped decking.
Thank you for the help guys. Their current decking is stained grey. I do not know if this was out of necessity to protect the wood and they were told stain was best or if they like the color.

My screen name is my initial. My parents have a good sense of humor
May I ask why exactly does it need to be 1x4?

If the customer wants something, and we have to make it, why would you feel bad? That's what we do. we modify/make/create all day every day and charge accordingly.
If he goes with the Trex Porch plank that's T&G, it's 4.25" it's "V" grooved
Trex makes a grooved.

Why do you not want T & G?
Their current decking wasn't spaced at all and caused moisture issue under the deck. There isn't enough clearance under it and there isn't much room for cross ventilation. It also creates a skating rink in the winter from what I have experienced.

To sum it up, I am too nice. I try my hardest to make everything as affordable as possible. Even if it takes me an extra 10hrs to find it that I don't charge them for. Once I know where to find it, I don't have to go looking again usually though. I don't have a lot of time and experience running my own company, so really, I am learning as I go (my previous employers weren't exactly a big help except learning what not to do). So if worst case scenario from all of this is I don't find anything that they would like, I would offer to mill down what is available. But either way, I will learn about new products and I love knowing as much as possible. PS. I ramble sometimes

They want the look of 1x4, they do not like wider planks. I don't blame them. I think with certain houses wider planks look out of place.

Thank you for the link for the V grooved. I have never seen that before and will definitely keep it in mind for future projects
