I have a hundert year-old water heater... most people think on demand water heating is a new idea. This one has a double helical copper coil heated by a gas burner. Water flows in cold and flows out hot.

Would be nice in a cabin even today.

I found this one at a salvage yard and turned it into a lamp.

Found the gas pipe
(still live) for one of those in
middle Sis' bathroom.
Wish I had your pic then,
I even had a hard time convincing
the plumber of what the gas was for.

We have a size 3 Ruud Instantaneous Water Heater on our show room floor and donated a size 5 to a property that is being restored.

These were/are great heaters as long as you could afford the gas bill you would never run out of hot water. The size 5 has a BTU rating of 160,000 and could run just about every hot water faucet in the house and not notice a drop in tempature.

The main problem with the heaters was that they were only 50% safety (pilot went out -gas was escaping) and major heat loss and no thermostats.

Another version of these was a smaller heater called a Sidearm Heater. Those were a disaster waiting to happen.

Neo, it could have been for a hot water heater... or a heater. When I was a kid we had a little gas wall heater with cool looking ceramic honeycomb grates. Rockin' gas room heater.

Definitely for a water heater.
There was/is a huge original
floor register.

The gas is on the left.
It was between the sink and tub.
