It's probably a typo. I have never seen aluminum coil or sheet thicker than .40. That's not to say it doesn't exist but that I've never seen it. Plus I have never installed .040, only .032 seamless gutter or sectional box.
I am also bidding a job that calls for .050 gutters and down. I sent a RFI to explain to him that the standard for gutters is .032 and for downs is .019. Have yet to receive response.
Same project; Architect specified schedule 80 pipe for the downspouts. I understand why the PVC downspouts(aluminum is a hot commodity in this neighborhood) but I think SCH 40 would do the job just fine.
Sure! Seamless in 10' sections! But seriously,no, that's crazy. No roll former manufacturer is going to make a special machine to run .050 and a machine that could roll .050 wouldn't be able to run .032. You'd have to buy a semi-custom machine for maybe $60k. What installer is going to run around telling customers "I can run you .050 seamless gutters for only $100/ft."
