Yes I have 5/8 inch flooring as the floor and nees 3/8 inch CDX as you said, that I was not sure what CDX was.

I not sure but the Stain that I am going to use is for DECKS and is $40.00 a gallon.

I feel if I go with 1/4 inch plywood and stain and treat it will last for a long time....
