If you use an oil based product you HAVE TO coat both the top and bottom of the floor. It has to seal, even on the bottom. I would use a waterbased stain.

The house is mostly cedar shakes with 1/4 of it cedar lap siding. I say sand...only because some of the shakes are real rough as if the person who built it or replaced rotted shakes them installed...
