I would think putting a bait station by the hole would take care of it. Perhaps entice them with some nuts in the station. After that, exclusion is always a good idea. Seal up those entry points....

I'm leaning towards juvenile rat. The way to tell the difference is to go to the attic and do an inspection. That will almost always clear the issue up about which it is.
