I wouldn't use mastic in a shower surround, but I certainly don't think you have a ticking time bomb there as long as the mastic was not spread too think and allowed to fully dry before grouting.

I can't speak highly enough of my Thorogoods. American made, not cheap, but mine are going on 18 months of 5 to 6 days a week wear. I used to get three to four months out of boots for reference.

I don't know how many jobs i set in the 90's over plywood. It works, we used to screw the hell out of the plywood, but why bother when it's so easy to get a better installation using the products...

Well I'll take a shot at it; a correctly built mud bed doesn't need to bond to the subsurface. I've actually pulled a few that were on tar or felt paper. So vinyl would act the same.
