Thanks for all the suggestions. I ended up notching the ff with a multitool and it looks good. The skins just wouldnt have worked for various reasons.

Adding the plywood top wouldnt work...

I think I'm gonna try clan's way. The smaller grill isn't under a window, it's under the a/c closet. The only problem with framing it is it's the first thing you see when you walk in the front...
