Success is in the eye of the beholder. Around here they used to just toss shingles right over the shakes. Most I've had the pleasure of dealing with has been shakes plus four, that was fun.

It really isn't that bad, we just use clipless hangers and screw right through the apron. I use the washered Roofing screws.
First screw is a little annoying if your trying to hold the trough up...
