I always use the dryer box. Works fine in a 2x4 wall, just squish the pipe a little. My inspector is fine with that method, yours may not be.

Your suggestion to cut a 45 degree angle in the drain pipe where it goes into the pump did the trick. I haven't had a leak in 2 weeks since I did this.
