I don't think we ever got an answer on what part of the country this is from, this type of work is not uncommon around here where Jose and Co. are doing it for $5 a foot.

Do you have a pic of the mason's placing one of them behemoths in the wall? You said something about 3-400lb stones, I can't imagine them being able to hoss them onto the wall by hand?

Just take a wood chisel and split the wooden one off, clean the tang off well, then use 5 minute epoxy and stuff it down in the hole of the new one, press it on and clean up the excess epoxy,...

The problem is they're 5 hole brick, hard fired, next to impossible to get them out without them breaking, especially with just a hammer and chisel.
