In 2006 I was contacted by Johnston Architects in Park Ridge IL to prepare a bid for the Northfield Community Church. Bruce Johnston is a member of the Northfield Community Church and was heading up the board for the roof replacement project. After meeting with Bruce to discuss ideas, it was apparent to me he knew what he wanted but was open to my ideas.
After our initial meeting I prepared a detailed inspection report for the board members with color photographs and a detailed scope of work with cost estimate. Several months later I was awarded the project, which at the time was a great opportunity for my young business. The job was good exposure and close to our Glenview office. I'd like to say we nailed it, because Bruce and several other board members from the Northfield Church have become very valuable repeat customers.
On the sanctuary portion of the church, there was a poured in place Gypsum substrate, with external scuppers. This was actually a suprise for us since the administrative area of the church has a warmdeck fiberboard substrate, and no way of checking the sanctuary. After performing pull out tests we determined that additional nails would be necessary. Afterall, if we're going to do it, we're going to do it right.
Torch applied granulated modified bitumen was installed in the pocket areas at the scuppers, and the rest of the gypsum substrate was covered with ice and water shield. Then CertainTeed Landmark architectural shingles were installed. At the lower administrative roof ice shield was isntalled at the gutter lines and walls with the remaining area covered with premium 30 Lb organic asphalt felt paper and then the shingles.
The roof to wall flashings were replaced with premium G90 galvanized 24 gauge steel counter flashings. We also replaced the gutter on the administrative building with a new 6" oversized .032 aluminum gutter.
