Hi guys, I just finished painting a 1700 sq. ft. home that I had hired a local guy to train one of my helpers to tape , and after we finished painting, we noticed every screw hole is showing (divits at every hole). My guy says that when the taper mixed the mud to fill the screw holes, he mixed the mud really thin, and I understand that is a no no. The taper is not taking any responsibility for this screwup and is expecting me to cover all costs of repairing this, saying that amateurs did the job and he is not responsible, even though his man mixed the mud, went over the screw holes personally the last time, and was the trainer of the job.
I don't know a whole lot about taping so I am not sure what went wrong with the application.
What does the drywallers' code of ethics say should be done?

Well yes, like I said before.... I don't have a lot of knowledge of drywall taping or finishing. But still the divits didn't really show up until the semigloss paint was put on.
All that aside, what do you suggest I do to fix that?

1st scuff the paint,
you will get lots of bubbles
going over the semi-gloss.
Considering the level of expertise
so far, I'd hesitate to recommend
setting compound this time.
Just don't thin your mud, plan on
2 coats, and plan to re-prime the whole
wall with a heavy nap roller, then sand,
then check it with a light, then paint.
Bet you pay more attention next time.....

You may not have even noticed if you were painting with white/flat paint. In the future remember that the higher the gloss in the paint, the more visible any flaws will be.

I would say they skipped a coat for sure. If the mud was very thin on the first coat.... you can hardly count that either. So best case scenario your screws got 1 ½ coats.

Next time check everything after the prime coat is on. That is the last time you have a chance to fix anything with costing you big bucks!!

Sorry bud.... you have to fill those screws... 2 coats right outta the bucket and repaint

Thats why I prime all my taping...anyways, you have to 3 coat, it kills me how many people skip steps.

Do it right the first time and check a rookies work everytime...lights are important, if your taper does not use a light to check his work, he aint worth a piss hole in the snow ;)

500 watt halogen

If you really want to see these early shine a 500 or 1000 watt light sideways across the wall. Also never inspect a job at night.

Did you call the crew back to fix these? I think that at this point it is on your shoulders, but nothing venture nothing gained maybe call the owner. They might have higher standards than the crew. Maybe.....

" Say Mr sheetrock I've got a situation I need your help with. I've got these strange divits in my walls that I don't know what caused them. Do you have a few minutes that you could help me figure this out."

I heard that brother:thumbup: I fix these issues all the time...the tapers wont come back or admit it's wrong:rolleyes:

Oh well...lessons are better learned through the School of hard knocks, maybe people will figure it out and hire a Pro next time...hmmm, probably not, but it's nice to think about ;)

I wish there was a code of ethics among the drywalling and painting trade because this is how I always see it:

Drywall guy "ahh that's not so bad the mud will cover that"

Taper "ahh that's not so bad the painter will touch that up"

Painter "I didn't bid high enough to fix all this crap work, just paint it!"
