How long are you guys getting out of your roller frames? A lot of these seem to be jamming up after just a few small jobs, I pop the covers off at the end of every day and try to clean the frames but a lot of times the paint has already dried. I cleaned some of them with simple green and it took some of the build up off but didn’t really free them. I’m thinking about soaking them in lacquer thinner but that’s probably not even worth it. This is just basic wall paint like Duration too.

Edit: mostly Wooster and some Purdy frames.

This is what I've been using forever Frame If you're getting that much paint inside the cover then it's the covers everything Purdy sucks.
Yeah I’ve gone through several of those frames the last year or so.

You’re saying the Purdy covers themselves just let more paint in? I guess I’ve been mostly using Purdy, they seem to put paint on pretty well and I’m used to them but I might as well try some Wooster ones.

If the core doesn't fit tight enough it will let too much paint in. I don't use anything Purdy since SW bought them years ago. I don't use polyester covers these are one of the covers I use Cover in the past I rarely cleaned covers but these are easy.

Honestly, I just buy new frames for jobs of any size. Not worth cleaning them. I use the Sherlocks as well. Best ones I've found.

Small bathroom, I'll grab an older decent one, maybe. I never clean the covers. Unless I realize I only have one cover in the trailer and need to swap colors or primer.

I use this brand for 9” and 18”

This is my favorite frame, have had it for years.

I buy frames by the cases and toss most of em after each job. Like roller covers, they're a consumable in my eyes. If I still bought the more expensive Sherlocks, then I'd try to make em last, but they'll usually get stuffed in a 5 after the job right next to a mountain of other 5's. They're then left to rot until it's time to make a dump run and dry out all my buckets. Then it's like Christmas morning when I open up all the 5's with rusty roller frames and brushes wrapped in plastic.
I decided a while ago that I just don't have fun cleaning brushes or rollers, so I don't spend a lot of my life doing it.

I thought they finally came up with a solution with the Sherlock system vs the mini roller frames that were just a rod. As far as the roller actually rolling. But once they get gummed up good enough they’re just as bad. I used to grease up the old style rod ones with Vaseline to see if that helped. The newer locking system gets gummed in a spot that’s harder to clean and make work. I’m gonna try 50/50 acetone and tranny fluid to see if that frees it up.

So you don’t clean the brushes either? Now I feel less bad how lax I’ve gotten on that. I used to clean them neurotically but now it’s like, “meh I’ll wrap that up for today, Ive got a few more things to do, probably have time tomorrow .” then a week later at the next job “oh. Crap! Guess I need to get some more brushes.”

That’s what I use for most of my mini frames.

what don’t you like about the Wooster cut buckets? What do you use?
I either cut out of the can or paint bucket I prefer to use the can with the lip I'll wipe off the rim I poured out of so that when I rest my brush in the can paint doesn't get on the handle, with a mini roller I use a 2 gallon bucket with 7" screen that also allows for a longer mini roller cover it's what I'm used to.

I always take my equipment home to wash I try and put them in a bucket with a little water when I leave but then I'll forget about them if I wrap them I'll totally forget them for weeks.

I have readily available relatively cheap brushes and covers. I may just trash those.

Then I have some expensive brushes and covers, plus some brushes that aren't made any more. I clean all those really really well.

For brushing trim, I have a handful of brushes, and will change brushes if the one I'm using isn't working well with the particular paint.

I try to make sure my brushes get cleaned. Great thing about chinex is it don't care if you wrap it in plastic and forget about it for a month. Still springs back to life. I get brushes by the cases too though, so unless I'm down to the last 12 pack or something, cleaning is low on priority. Not necessarily proud of that fact, but it's the truth.

I clean quality brushes well, rollers depends how used it is

Mike
Clean brushes mostly. Like to clean roller well enough for primer or keep long enough for rough painting a time or two more. Don’t go crazy about it. My little 360 sprayer I try to keep looking new long as possible though. Even the cups.
