I’m thinking about getting a 48” skimming blade for blending in doorways, those humps you always see on basement stairs etc. Is there really that much difference difference between brands? No one one local sells one so I can’t see it In person, I’m thinking Marshaltown would be good for $70, I also see off brands for 30-40 and level 5 for 190. I’m willing to pay if it really matters but I have hard time believing one skimming blade is worth that much more.

Do you guys find yourself using smaller blades like 24” or 32” more often? I didn’t really want to spring for a whole set right away, I figured it would be best to start bigger, have the reach if I needed it and buy more later if I wanted but maybe not.

48 is way too wide, your are working on a house not a spaceship. It does not have to be that flat. I have a 24 and a 30 I think, never use the 30.

A 48 would be hard to control especially with mud on it and trying to wipe it off
I've not used bigger than 24" for that very reason.

The small ones look like they can replace traditional knives due the comfort of grip.
Are you phasing out the regular knives?
About the only thing I did not use a skimming knife for was tape bedding, for that I use a 3” knife.

For the most part all of my drywall tools have been retired. With my change in focus they’re not needed.
