That's a big bathroom.
Yep, horrible design, almost all empty space. Huge bathroom and the original contractor put a 3x3 fiberglass shower in one corner. H/O ripped it out and framed in a bigger walk-in. Everything is about a 1/3 done poorly. They lost the house and the new owner called me in. Definitely not a good scenario. I am 67, half retired and just got an ankle replacement. Most likely will decline this job.

"I've always wanted a pool table in my bathroom..." 😆

Sucks with the ankle. Well hopefully you continue to hang around and perhaps post at a rate exceeding 5 posts/12 years.:D

I was responding to what pounder said, nothing to do with you. I doubt many have done this as the risk far outweighs any benefits. In my own house I might try it but not for a paying customer.

If the Ditra and tile are already installed, putting plywood over it might work for LVP, but it's not the usual way to do things. You'd need to make sure everything's flat and secure.

Taking it all out and starting fresh would be the safest bet, but it's more work and cost.

Thank you Botman.

Folks are touchy this morning, guess I missed something triggering? OP was interesting enough question because I've never seen that (LVP over Ditra/Tile) either. Hope we're not talking about this in the shower pan? Otherwise, dunno why it wouldn't work with the right mortar bed - but taking out the cracked tile and starting over is how I would do it.

I was asked to look at a bathroom, about 300 square feet, the other day. They installed Ditra underlayment and actually did a good job on it. The homeowners then set some cheap 8x20 wall tile on half the floor. It has cracked and the new home buyer needed advice. He wants to go with LVP. I told him that everything would have to come up including the underlayment, then scraped and smoothed out before putting down a quality plywood u-lay. The flooring store recommended just putting down the wood underlayment over top of the ditra to match the tile height that is in there then installing the LVP over it. I am guessing this would work as long as there is no loose tiles and making sure there are no deep grout lines. More than a little leery though. Your thoughts?
not getting why putting down new ply?/ there
s so many good cups to put on angle grinders to get the thinset up. . If 3/4 below the tile. if tile wasnt cracked or loose could go right over the top. actually why lvp was designed 15-20 years ago. get subfloor clean and roll. dust extractor key on that process

Just to let people know I told the homeowner that it all had to come up. the lady who formerly owned it actually did a pretty good job of it herself. I only had a couple hours of final clean up. when I was in the crawlspace doing some plumbing for the big soaker tub I discovered that the floor joists are 2' OC with no bridging. no wonder the tile cracked.
