I was asked to look at a bathroom, about 300 square feet, the other day. They installed Ditra underlayment and actually did a good job on it. The homeowners then set some cheap 8x20 wall tile on half the floor. It has cracked and the new home buyer needed advice. He wants to go with LVP. I told him that everything would have to come up including the underlayment, then scraped and smoothed out before putting down a quality plywood u-lay. The flooring store recommended just putting down the wood underlayment over top of the ditra to match the tile height that is in there then installing the LVP over it. I am guessing this would work as long as there is no loose tiles and making sure there are no deep grout lines. More than a little leery though. Your thoughts?

I do wh
Remove the tile, cover the Ditra, lay LVP.

Biggest issue will be elevation.

Makes sense, definitely for elevation. still debating on this job. I hate coming into the middle of something like this. I am winding down my career after 47 years in the business, just had a new ankle put in and this is my first job back.

at I think is best not what someone else suggest you can just go to Home Depot and ask a random employee.

I don't have any issue answering simple questions. It's not as though we have some arcane knowledge that's only shared with other members of our secret society. 95% percent of what's discussed here is nuts and bolts construction.

Yeah and a great group of people with valuable knowledge. How long is everyone going to stick around with tons of stupid HO'ers questions? There's a whole site just for them that you can help as many as you want. Lots of forums restrict users to keep out the riff raff.

You could lay the LVP over the existing Ditra if it's in good condition, but it's risky. Any issues with the Ditra could mess up your new floor. Pulling up everything and starting fresh might be a pain, but it's the safer bet for a long-lasting floor. If you do go over the Ditra, make sure it's super clean and flat. Fill in any grout lines or gaps to avoid problems. It's a bit of a gamble either way, so weigh the pros and cons based on the condition of the current setup.

That's a good point, though it doesn't account for the hostility presented to many new members. All that does is perpetuate the the poor image many people have of contractors. If the owners of this place really cared about it, they would alter the registration process to help weed out the non professionals.

We're here to share knowledge and experience, and I do that freely. I never saw a rule stating that I had to verify the credentials of anyone asking a question, the moderators do that.
I'll try to be more cognizant of who is asking the question, but I certainly won't be demanding identification before engaging with them.

don't know why you think this is a homeowners question. Been in the business for 47 years and have never been in the situation where a potential client wanted to lay LVP over ditra. Just wondering if anyone else has done this. I am skeptical, but thought I would ask.
