I have a partial roll of Kerdi membrane and some unmodified thinset left over from another project...quite enough of it that I could cut some strips of the membrane to use as an approximation of Kerdi band and then use that instead of a new roll of alkali-resistant tape. I have 7/8ths of a gallon of Red Guard which will be the surface waterproofing layer. I saw this thread: https://www.contractortalk.com/threads/kerdi-band-on-durock.85111/ and I'm not sure that the OP was asking the same thing, namely:
tl;dr:
Would there be any disadvantage in using left-over Kerdi membrane cut into strips and unmodified thinset—items already on hand and in substitution for the A-R mesh tape so less expensive overall—to patch the Hardie joints?
