Just finished new lvp flooring in most of my house. As a gift to my awesome self for actually finishing something I started in my own home, I bought a really nice roomba vacuum/mop. Holy hell have these things gotten more sophisticated . But one thing they obviously cannot do is climb stairs.

I have a 18*18 sunken living room that breaks up the open-concept main floor of my house. Previously, I would just lift the Roomba up and place it on the next level then let it finish her [heheh] job and carry it back to the charger when it was dead. That gets old, especially since this thing returns to its charger automatically and then resume its project once the battery is charged up enough.

That got old fast, so I built her a ramp and finished it with the same flooring. Waiting for a couple more pieces of the corner trim to come in the mail but you get the idea. It took the robot one or two tries before it learned where that ramp was but it hits it every time now.

Just a little idea for you guys. A one hour fix to a very modern first world problem..

You do realize it maps out your home and sends that information to the cloud. I'm sure someone has an interest in the layout of your home.....

Love the name.

Yeap. Of course. The day I started carrying a smart phone in 2009, I sold my last ounce of privacy for two ounces of convenience. I'm at peace with it.

The inside map of my rectangular ranch home is an extremely boring series of rectangles, and is nothing that couldn't easily be deduced from just looking in my big picture window as you drove past on the road.

I bought the shark brand that empties itself a few years ago. Either I wasn't smart enough to run program it, or it was a POS. Likely the first. Would come home & it was stranded with a dead battery & uncleaned floors. Finally found another cleaning lady & sold the frustration to my niece. She's smarter than I am.

Don't people trip or fall on the edge. Most folks I know are getting rid of the sunken living rooms or raised dining areas, etc., just for that reason.

Ahh no... Hasn't been an issue in the ten years I've owned the house. I would love to raise it up so that the great room is one big flat surface, but the sunken living room is adjacent and wide open to a four season room that was installed at the same level. The project of getting the sunroom and the living room under the same level as the rest of the house was just too much. It would mean opening up walls and raising up a header, and losing 8 in of overhead clearance in the sunroom. No bueno.

Thread drift. Did anyone watch the 60 Minutes show yesterday about google and their AI lab? they had two robots playing soccer. Fascinating accomplishments. And a little scary.
A lot scary. Put a gun in their hands and use night sensors and just send them out.

Our friends had a Roomba until it encountered, devoured, and redistributed a pile of dog poop in the midst of it’s late night shift

This one supposedly detects pet waste and avoids. Thankfully haven't had test that yet, especially since this one mops as well as vaccums. That would spread around a nasty mess

Me, I just push around a Miele, bagged, dog/cat canister vac. The best vacuum I have ever owned and a great assortment of extra attachments + A 5 YEAR WARRANTY. I refuse to have any "Smart" appliances, the smarter they are the sooner they wear out. Fewer bells and whistles make for a longer life. I never trusted robot vacs to do the job as well as I do.
