Hello all and thanks in advance for your help.

Im looking to add a 15' lean-to extension off our existing garage roof line and Im stuck between two different solutions on how to attach the lean-to. The existent roof overhangs the support wall by approx. 1'.

We are in a 10/lb/ft snow load area.
We new roof will be shingled and will have a 3/12 slope.

I have attached a picture to show two different ideas I have of joining the lean-to to the roof. Please let me know what you think would work best, or if there is a solution I'm not mentioning. Any help is much appreciated!

n just tack the new rafters to the ends of the old ones. The new rafter weight has to be above the walls. Best would be to cut existing rafter tails off at exterior wall line and set new rafters on wall next to existing. Add blocking in between on top of wall and reroof at least first couple rows of existing roof.

In your plan as said the new rafters need to sit on the top plate of the main structure.
Think about making it freestanding -- post's and headers near the garage as well as away from it.
You can install flashing material between the two roofs.

I thought we were supposed to send non-contractors over to our cousin Larry's DIY site....

THEN.....

If those here want to help show off their opinions.......we'd all end up over there and share every possible idea.

That Canuck Neal over there is a beast. He responds to almost ALL framing and carpentry posts.

For the lean to off my shop we simply ran the rafters adjacent to the existing trusses, picked our pitch, then used GRK fasteners to attach them to each other. Once everything was together I went back through and put what I'm going to call a band joist (I'm not a framer) or a cleat plate underneath everything to help distribute the load.

It's still there after several winters.
