I see people putting vinyl over old siding fairly often so I know it’s an option but it never really felt right to me, what’s the CT crowds opinion on this? Is it a solid option or is it always a budget alternative to doing it right and stripping the old stuff off?

I looked at an exterior in St Paul yesterday that was totally shot to hell, they wanted rotted boards replaced and everything scraped and painted but I’m thinking I’ll run some numbers on using a paint shaver and on residing too just to see how close it is, especially since I need to factor in all the fun with lead paint.

I do it all the time with steel siding, put fan fold on and go. Houses with fiber board sheeting or exterior grade sheet rock is only way to go. Only time I would pull the old was if it was shakes or cedar the was curled bad. Other wise is no real reason to pull if solid.

I do everthing I can to talk people out of vinyl.
What don’t you like about vinyl? The look of a double dutch? How easily it cracks? The look of the J channel around windows? Just the fact that’s it’s not wood or metal? I’m genuinely curious, it’s not my favorite material but I’ve always thought it was a decent option if you did a good job installing it and didn’t go with the cheapest 040 panel you could find

Vinyl is not good at hiding any imperfections under it. I would not apply it over existing wood siding, way too bumpy. If the client insisted because of price, I would pass on the project. Rather pass than do subpar work.
I would do if it was a panel siding like T1-11 but not anything with reveals om each row.

You use a fanfold foam and side over that. A good sider will make it look like a flat wall.

The place for vinyl in this situation is the repairs can be quick and dirty and you can side right over the ugly paint job.

Done it a million times.

Yep fanfold will give you a flat wall to work on. will not show old siding. Can take a sow's ear and make a silk purse.

Vinyl is not allowed in new construction in the jurisdiction I live in.
Around here, the wind rips it off regularly & the hail pokes holes in it every year. The sun chalks it up rather quickly. My biggest beef with it though, is all of the openings that allow the bugs to take up residence in every nook and cranny, and get behind the siding to build huge nests.
Perhaps these issues would be mitigated by a competent installer using the best of the materials available, but j-channel still looks like azz.

I was downright flabbergasted when I traveled to the East side of the country, and even the high end homes were covered in vinyl siding.

No offense intended to vinyl hanger and anyone else who make their living installing this stuff. Just my perceptions.
