Use a grout bag. Use type s mortar or Portland cement and sand 2 to 1 mix. The mix should be rich enough to slide through the bag easily. Don't make it too wet or loose. If it's rich it'll flow easily.
Wait until joints begin to stiffen up then strike them.
Wait again until joints stiffen up further, then use a blower to blow them off the stone. At that point any mortar residue can be taken off with a trowel and blown off again.
When you get used to the bag and this method, you'll never do it any other way.
I'm 58 and learned the masonry trade from my Father. Started with him in 1986 and still going.
Good luck.

I ended up here for a different reason but I’m blown away by the carpenter’s nurse posture.

A little “introduction” for Greg Focker. I was a commodities trader in the early 2000’s. That means I traded wheat, corn, and soybeans. Trading pits were open from 9:30-1:15. If you didn’t have a hobby in the afternoon, you needed up at bars. I took up stonework as a hobby. Did a few patios for friends and people started asking for more. When housing bubble hit, trading went to ****. I stepped out of the pits and into stonework full time. I wouldn’t have been able to do so if it wasn’t for guys that answered my questions at material yards and on job sites. Fast forward 15-20 years and I’m one of the best in my area. I’m never afraid to give up and comers tips because I’m confident in my work. Stone walls and fireplaces set me apart.

I would never be where I am if it wasn’t for solid guys answering questions at material yards or job sites. The fact that CarpenterRN got his framing square bent out of shape tells me that his work doesn’t speak for itself. If he was confident in how good he is, he wouldn’t worry about someone asking for help. The fact that Leo G. banned the conversation starter only validates a bull**** attitude.

Good job being dicks.
