Wow, 5th grade math.

Cut a fraction in half you multiply the denominator (bottom) by 2.

Any fraction with the same top and bottom number = 1. 4/4=1 5/5=1.

So if you have 1/3 you need 3 of them to make a whole. 1/3+1/3+1/3=3/3=1

They weren't smarter. There was no Dept of Education dictating what must be taught. Different areas taught different things because it related to where they lived. Plus they taught that our country was good and taught about the constitution and bill of rights and the federalist papers so people knew how the country should be run and how/why the country was setup the way it is.

Common core isn't the problem, lowering standards to meet the lowest common denominator is the problem.

You can't teach to the dumb kid's level only, it leaves everyone else behind.

It's not failing us. It's designed that way to produce what the govt wants. Little automatons that do as they're told and to recite what they've been shown. No critical thinking allowed.

The only ones who get real education are the elite who send their children to private schools because they can afford them. It's another reason why I think private school costs have gone up so much. To make it so the serfs can't afford it and get an old school non govt education that allows you to think for yourselves instead of echoing the propaganda taught in public schools.

All this crap was just starting up when I was in school. I was still taught to think and not recite. Since I was advanced in math I was essentially teaching myself because the teachers were busy teaching the other kids who were 2 books behind me.

My wife, a college educated woman, one time told me "It's three and two quarters" while measuring something.

Technically right I guess, but I asked her if she remembered about reducing fractions.

This guy does a really good job of showing the idea behind it too.

I would liken it to teaching a laborer something new. If you show them why they are doing something a certain way, rather than just telling them to do something with no understanding of why, you are more likely to get a laborer that can learn and anticipate steps ahead later on.

Then you have to figure it out every time instead of just knowing 12x12 is 144

Worked well for centuries. Until the progressives got a hold of it and needed to "remake" math. Now math is racist too.

The video was posted in 2015 likely using information from years prior. It states the US was ranked 27th out of 34 developed countries in math. The only way to prove that CC works is to show data that proves the program has been effective enough in the years after the video posting to move the US significantly in the rankings among those other countries. A quick internet search reveals that is not the case. What am I missing?

The teachers union isn't about teaching, it's about teachers getting paid.
