Stair Stringers

Hey All,

Does anyone know of a general rule of thumb for determining what length lumber to use for stringers based on overall rise? For example, if I have a set of stairs that rise 10', can I purchase a 2X12X12 and have enough length for a stringer? I don't do enough framing for it to be second nature and haven't found anything online. I hate to waster lumber, especially given current costs.

Thanks,
Silvio

12 ft 2x12 won't be long enough. There are many stair calculators online. For what you say 7.5" rise takes a 15'-8" stringer.

Hopefully you can get 20ft 2x12 --- they are heavy...heavy..btw.

If inside, LVL's are sometimes the better choice. Me, I would have to look up if single or double for each stringer is the way to go.

But an app is so much easier.

This is the calculator I use. I use it for all sorts of things. The baluster calculator is awesome. Saves a ton of time.
