I have a project that I need some advice on. I have an old home that has 30' tall wood columns that need all levels of repair. The porch structure the wood columns sit on is completely deteriorated. The game plan is to shore up the two story roof structure, remove the columns and construct a concrete and brick footing for the column to sit on. The column removal is not a big deal except the top of the column has a ornate cast plaster capital. Removal of the capital looks like it could be a problem The columns are 24" in diameter and the capital looks like it is surface mounted around the top of the column. If any one has had experience with a project like this I would like to communicate to get some advice. I have pictures to share if someone is interested in my project.
Thanks,
Bob

Will do. Did not know if anyone was interested. I need to download them in the morning at my office.
Thanks for the reply.
Not just "yeah, I am interested" but "hell yeah, I am interested".

Andy.

Since I am new to this site can anyone tell me how to post pictures for my desk top computer to the message dialog box. The upload picture icon will not allow me to access my computer files and the copy and paste command does not work. Cannot find a help menu on the site for additional information.

As you can see in the photos, the owner has let this project deteriorate way beyond a point of an easy repair. The columns will need new bases and I am sure I can get these made without any issues. The wood joints in the columns will need to be filled and sealed. I if anyone has suggestions on products to seal and finish out the joints it would be appreciated. The column capitals are original and made of plaster. It might be wise to find a new replica and just replace the existing with new capitals. I am sure someone has had experience with a vendor who can make these or has a replica capital on hand. If you can share any information it would be appreciated.

I can't be much help on the capitals. I've done acres of lime plaster on flat surfaces but here in the mountains we don't deal with ornate details often.

On the columns though I would suggest West System epoxy with the filler additive. It can be sourced online at jamestowndistibuters.com/

I use it often for exterior wood repairs on historic homes. Enjoy that project!!
