I need a recommendation for a stud finder for plaster and lathe, preferably from HD.

Why does everyone add an "e" to lath...it's not a friggin' machine shop.

It's almost as bad as two "a's" in Masonry

Are we talking rib lath, rock lath or wood lath?

I've got all kind of detectors and quite frankly finding studs in plaster is almost impossible...look for electrical boxes and pull 16's off of that...tap with your hand or use a small rubber mallet and listen for a thud, cross your fingers and drill a small test hole to confirm.

Rare earth magnets work with plaster and wood lath (drywall too). They will locate the nails that hold the lath in place. Sometimes the studs aren't plumb or don't run all the way so I use several on each stud to confirm locations. They can make marks on the wall, you can protect it with a piece of paper if it matters. Lots of fun???

IIRC the ones in my toolbox are 3/8". BTW after a while the chrome coating starts to come off....potential for nasty splinters.

I have the Franklin and Zircon w/deep scanning and I use a stack of rare Earth magnets when it's narrowed down. I also use painters tape and do all my markings on it.

I think the Franklin is good for a quick find, the Zircon does fine tune it and the magnetics confirm it. The Zircon also has an electrical warning light. I drill a small pilot hole to confirm the confirmations if I'm mounting a lag screw or something.

I installed a giant TV yesterday over a fireplace and neither stud finder worked very well. I have the Franklin and a mid range Zircon.

I assume fireproof dense drywall was used. Used a earth magnet to find the screws but there was no wood behind one. Finally did find the stud 12" apart. Could be the batteries were weal or cold too though.
