I need a recommendation for a stud finder for plaster and lathe, preferably from HD.
You might try supermagnets to find the nail heads. Maybe there's a difference from the lathe. Double them up for stronger magnetism.I need a recommendation for a stud finder for plaster and lathe, preferably from HD.
Good luck with that. You might try supermagnets to find the nail heads. Maybe there's a difference from the lathe. Double them up for stronger magnetism.

Yo, nice attytood. Why does everyone add an "e" to lath...it's not a friggin' machine shop.
It's almost as bad as two "a's" in Masonry
.
You could probably stack a few supermagnets for the same result. I haven't tried it, but it should be similar. This is what I use for lath and plaster and it's 100% every time.

That's essentially what I do, move a stack of them across the wall and as I find a nail head I leave one magnet behind on it. Eventually I have a grid of magnets on the wall indicating where the lath is nailed, hopefully there's a stud there too. It's usually really close. You might try supermagnets to find the nail heads...... Double them up for stronger magnetism.
Nah stud finders are just garbage. Knock on the wall then poke a piece of piano wire through.I installed a giant TV yesterday over a fireplace and neither stud finder worked very well. I have the Franklin and a mid range Zircon.
I assume fireproof dense drywall was used. Used a earth magnet to find the screws but there was no wood behind one. Finally did find the stud 12" apart. Could be the batteries were weal or cold too though.
I did find them with a little persistence. The Zircon is more accurate the Franklin fast and general. I drill a small hole first to make sure then go for the gusto.Nah stud finders are just garbage. Knock on the wall then poke a piece of piano wire through.
The Franklin is the worst.I did find them with a little persistence. The Zircon is more accurate the Franklin fast and general. I drill a small hole first to make sure then go for the gusto.
I have plaster board and plaster. I think he was just clarifying what typeWhy does everyone add an "e" to lath...it's not a friggin' machine shop.

Are we talking rib lath, rock lath or wood lath?
I've got all kind of detectors and quite frankly
finding studs in plaster is almost impossible...look for electrical boxes and pull 16's off of that...tap with your hand or use a small rubber mallet and listen for a thud, cross your fingers and drill a small test hole to confirm.
