Designer has asked me to cut the tile for shower floor out of main floor's tile. The area is 37"x 66" or 2442 sq in. Divided by 4 (2"x2" tile)= 610 tiles minus 1/8" grout joint of 152 tiles = 458 individual tiles to place.

2 1/2" tile size =488 minus 122=366 tiles to place.

The question is should I glue the tile to a backing or set individual tiles? Seems like a PITA either way.

I had a the same situation earlier this year. Not quite as large but close. After making a jig to back them I ended up just hand setting them. if you think about it you are setting them several times to make the backer / jig work. and unless you make a bunch of jigs you will have to wait til the glue cures on any backer you use before you can progress to the next "sheet"

Your 12x12 picture gives me the idea that rows spaced then topped with Mosaic Mount might make this faster. Two or three row grouping would be lighter to move and set.

Or just go for it by using a piece of plywood 12"x 36" marked with the spacing as a guide. The plywood put against the long wall to keep everything running straight.

Mosaic Mount is a less sticky 14"x14" mounting sheet that is applied to the top of the tile. I've used it before for 1"x1" glass tiles that I had to remove from it's original mesh and remount. That job was about 1400 tiles. Yeh, that was a fun job!
