they are easy money, in & out in a day.
i know crews doing 2-3 a day all season.
he is raking in quite a good sum..
im sure you are already in w/ major distribution houses...
equipment is bob cat & hand tools... your insurance goes down...

no more iron worker insurance clause

we are not in biz to make for great summer parties & neighborhood bragging rights, and helping the jones keep up w/ the jones's.

we work to aquire wealth...

Whats do homeowners pay for an AG pool?? I see the dealer cost pricing in the catologs and it seems like it can be can money at it if you are in and out quick. Like no more than a day.

Whats funny, is before i got into the pool biz i'd run my mouth saying that should be banned by the towns and that they only belong in trailer parks!

But now, i wouldn't mind doing a couple.

Where i live i could install a bunch. The towns that i like to work i couldn't sell any.

I am even considering doing liner pools. Not everyone can afford to spend almost 40k on a fiberglass. I hate to pass up customers because my product doesn't fit their budget.

Here in Central NJ you'd be hard pressed to find anything but liner pools. Average house is $400,000 and up. There is one house close to me that had a "concrete" one they did over the winter (Dec & Jan). That's the exception rather than the rule.
Once you break the $1million barrier you'll see concrete.

liner pools are becoming the norm in backyard installations, panel arrengements now offer any concievable shape & spill over spas are becoming a standard as is stone/brick coping.

in the true high end concrete will always be king, as it offers the masonry detail expected in this market.

bottom line want to have fun w/ your family liner pool is for you,
competeing w/ the Jones's concrete..

Ray so where does fiberglass fit in??
Rusk - I can't speak for Ray - I'm not anywhere near him ... and I can't speak for your area cuz I'm not anywhere near you.

in the area I'm at - vinyls/fiberglass make up approx 2% built ...

if I traveled 2 hours west ... vinyls have a stronger presence than they do here. But gunite is still king.

personally, im indifferent to all 3. If I ever have one of my own, it'll be a gunite. I have my own reasons for that though (mainly due to design)

round here, when someone does want a fiberglass, it's mainly due to the quick installation. They want it yesterday and figure that is all that matters. I've found it's probably not even worth returning these people's phone calls. Normally what'll happen is that guys from the coast will come up, slap it in, and be done. They're set up for it - I'm not.

and they'll beat my price by 10-20% easily.

Right now, I offer all three. But I've stopped putting effort (well, money rather) into advertising for the vinyls/fibers. I'd rather take the money and put it towards getting another gunite.

Rusk - point is ... it really depends on your particular area.

Ray is right - you can do many things with a vinyl --- heck, I've seen pictures of some that if it weren't for a trained eye, I wouldn't know the difference. There are some very impressive vinyl builders -- especially up towards Ray's way.

But it depends on what is in demand for your area. What percentage of pools built are actually fiberglass in your area (I can't remember where you're from --- I keep thinking Texas or Oklahoma though)

Don't base your market on someone elses --- cuz it changes literally from area to area. It'll throw a wrench in the monkey (er, or something like that) I made that mistake and if I didn't correct it when I did, I'd not be sitting here talking in the Pool forum

Ray so where does fiberglass fit in??

i think fiberglass is going to fill a void in the future & i see its low maintence, EZ cleaning , and supposedly never needs resurfacing (not true with the last generation of fibers, but they are vastly improvong) i see fiberglass for the low maintence mindset..

as far as you getting into the inground liner biz, that is a whole set of specialized skills, i was fortunate enough to run many of those installs when i was in college, i have also given several "lecture/classes" to our regional chapter...

i think what is important is to set your self apart as an installer, one of my "tricks" is to double plumb all installs & renovations, meaning i lay a set of dumby pipes in the ground along w/ the active plumbing. so when a pipe does break & it is more common than most think. the only excavation is at the pool wall & filter, to activate the dumby line, ie: no major patio demolition.

i know several outfits in your area that are doing quite well w/ vynal.. im not an expert in NJ but i think An****ny Sy**n (I know some of those boys down your way) will give the fiberglass market a run for its money w/ their low cost concrete package..

that's the other thing ... it is a different installation...

also - one challenge (true in fiberglass too) you're dealing with a manufactured item (the vinyl package) ... haven't had one vinyl pool where didn't have to send one panel back (bowed)

also - costwise .... there really isn't that much difference b/n the 3... not enough to sway anyone's mind at least

not in my book at least ...

it still comes down to whichever is popular in your area

That is true. Alot of the fiberglass pool makers, especially the guys with 50 different models use cheaper molds. The molds have a wood substrate instead of steel. The mold can flex, and make every pool different. These companies will even give there dealers instuctions on how to strighten the pools out.

My company uses steel in its mold. Each mold is laser shot before each pool gets shot.
