How many framers switch to galvanized nails to nail the studs into the treated bottom plate.

I do, but I often wonder about everyone else. I usually make it a point to remind every one that we need to use galvanized nails into the treated bottom plate. Will sometimes use a double bottom plate ( lower one pressure treated, top regular wood) to avoid this problem.

We use a double bottom plate in this instance. While non galvanized nails may make their way into it during the process, I always makes sure someone goes around after with galvanized nails to back nail everything into PT off.

On a large job we switch clips between galvanized and non.... On a small job usually I just use all galvanized, due to getting away with just a box or two.

Depends on the treated lumber. New stuff eats sticks like crazy, borate is ok for non galv. Cost of a box makes a huge diff, not for only me but the gc. Price goes up with them.

It's hot dipped for everything! Takes more time to switch and make sure everybody switches back! I will admit that we don't frame entire houses like other pros here.

I don't like all the part boxes of galvy and non. We just use ring shank galv. on everything. More money=less worries I guess.

Is there any reason, other than cost, why I shouldn't just use galvanized on everything? I usually don't even go through 1000 in a month and I just stock the two main sizes, all hdg.

Well jeez, if I'm only managing to put in 8 nails an hour I better at least be putting them in the right places. If I start having to pull them out too then I'll never get anywhere.

All sheet goods - walls, floors, and roofs, are galvanized ring shank. All PT, including bottom plates, is galvanized. Any exposed framing - decks for example - are HDG. Coated sinkers for unexposed general framing - they are not coming out.

Edit: Lots of stainless roofing nails and box after box of stainless screws, for most exposed stuff. The fog around here kills everything else, pronto.

When I framed a lot, they used to tell us to use galvanized for that but no one ever did it. Inspector never made us lift a wall up to check either.

No PT plates up here in Toronto. For any matter, we don't use any galvies for anything. (house framing that is)

My crew I make sure we use galvies for anything with pt contact, ya it sucks switching, but when I hear "we gotta do this right, grab the galvies",I feel everyone has been trained properly. Brites everywhere else
