Pouring a sloped driveway.......

yeah I've seen that used before but I'm wanting something to hold the concrete back don't I ?? Something as strong as wood?? I thought I'd run an expansion every 10-15' and use rebar as stakes to hold it in place..

The sub grade is really one of the most important things, like someone else already said. I'd set up a 100', probably go 6" thick though, use fiber and pour it, knock it down, bull float it and broom it.

had two estimates today for asphalt @12'.. should be getting the bids in tomorrow...

after thinking this through more I may cheap out a bit if the asphalt is to high and just go 10' wide, maybe kick it up to fiber crete forget the steel?? what do you think?? fiber crete without steel yeah or nah??

10' or 11' wide seems good enough, I'll bring the sides to grade with a couple strips of sod.. just seems easier to screed at 10'... dunno that's why I'm asking the pros, and I know I should leave it to a pro but can't afford it atm...

This thread is the blind leading the blind.... A 400' driveway is not a Saturday pour with a couple guys who have helped pour some concrete before.

Sub-base is the most important part.... wire mesh, fiber mesh, rebar does not matter much if you are starting with a poor sub base.

Power screed is a good idea.... put a broom finish on it, a good trowel finish on a 100' pour is not for a rookie..... control joints every 10', and one down the center of the drive. Use a cork, asphalt, or synthetic expansion joint where each pour meets up, place this after you strip the form from the previous pour.

The sooner you can cut control joints the better chance you have at controlling cracks. We use Soff cut saw so we can cut joints the same day.

LOL you're not just whistling dixie ;)

got one of the bids in for asphalt and I'm tempted at 11k for 9' wide.. I had him also bid it at 12', I've decided also to have a concrete guy come out and give me a bid so I can compare the two and be done with this thing..

I may try to negotiate a partial trade for a truck I have... :thumbsup:

IMO, for that large a driveway go with asphalt.

If you are planning in peddling the place, if you get cracks you can just reseal the asphalt.:thumbsup:

Nothing like pulling up to a place for sale & seeing a cracked concrete driveway....:no:

I think it would be cool to pour it all at once.

Part of the reason for this is that it will take as many people to pour 400' as it will to pour 100'.

You would want to have the following:

1 chuteman

1 hoe operator

2 power screed operators (I would screed straight across)

1 bull float operator

1 trowel on a stick operator

1 broom operator

2 guys to do the edging, put rebar in, put in and take out forms and expansion joint, etc.

You would want to switch the hoe operator, chute man, and screeders as necessary with the other guys.

You might try to get two guys on hoes, but it will be tight in 12' space.

I would want to start pouring at 6 in the morning if possible and be finished at 13:00 for lunch.

I think your expansion joints will be the most trouble.

It's just a wide sidewalk after all.

My recommendation is to hire a contractor. A 400' x 13' driveway is not for an inexperienced bunch of buddies drinking beer.

Btw, where do you get concrete for $74/CY?

Decided to hire it out adn got a slamming deal on asphalt my wife's uncle is a salesrep at apac which is a supplier here in ok... 10' wide by 400 for 6500 !!!!

and I checked my pricing the other day and it is 79cy I have an account at greenhill...

Sorry Charles, but the blind leading the blind comment is an insult to the many qualified posters who have given this guy solid information from the start. Then again, maybe i'm blind, but whoever said this was a Saturday pour and had to be done in one day?

Maybe you should strip those goggles off and re-read the thread. Blind leading the blind always meant fools given foolish advice to me and I just don't see it...maybe you could enlighten on that.

BTW...lastdaze, that's a hellava price for macadam, it approaching $70 a ton here and for a proper job you'll still need your base, binder and top coat. Can't imagine him making a single penny on that job.

Also, general pricing for concrete at our local plant is currently $100.00 a yard and a buck fifty delivery for a ten yard front loader. If your a hundred yard customer needing it in one day, $85.00 would probably be your best pricing.

Good luck with whatever you choose and keep us informed of the outcome.

thanks for all the reply's !!! to update I went ahead and used the asphalt guy, he did a real decent job didn't try to crown his grade and all in all I was happy....

listed the house last Friday adn it sold on Monday... completely out of control.................

my next delima is moving May 10...


I will have pics to follow of the drive...
