I like redwood's method for uplift resistance but that still doesn't appear to address the issue of lateral stiffness. I agree, there are several good ideas that have been mentioned here that I will add to my bag of tricks for future reference. Still can't beat setting the post down into the ground but then there's the rot issue. Holding it farther back from the riser allows you to increase the bolt spacing but creates an aesthetic issue, as well as increasing the difficulty of getting your graspable handrail to reach the bottom riser. Last job I did, I used a structural mount lagged down through the decking into doubled 2 x 10s. THAT was rock solid, but those posts are $60 each.
 
Here's what I did. Every surface has PL, even the bottom of the post. Then when the decking went on, it made it even more stiff.

when the decking goes on tight, it really stiffens things up like you said,
i discovered that today :thumbup:
