Getting rough finish with airless spray. Help?

Spraying trim with Devoe Wonder-tones latex semi-gloss, Titan Advantage 400, graco contractor gun and RAC X 310 FFT. The finish is all rough though. . . Not sure what to do. I've used my little graco gun in the past with no problems. Any ideas what could be causing this? Maybe the coat isn't thick enough? Thanks in advance.

Is this new drywall? what level finish are you applying the finish coat to?
Is this consistent and the same product you've always used?

Look for any changes that might have occurred since the last time you've used this product. Batch changes, environment, equipment.

If its new drywall, you sure its not hair raising from the drywall?

Im spraying the trim, I think it's just mdf. The sprayer is new too though, i usually use a small graco handheld. No materials are different than usual though. I'm getting tiny air bubbles in some spots as well. Used to get great finishes with that little handheld, but it was just too small and now I can't really replicate it

Quite possibly your passes are too fast and too soon trapping air and not allowing skinover time. Read Manf specs and check the millage applied and dft times. You may just be applying too little to fast and trying to second coat too soon. Also ,what psi ? another problem could be over atomization (drying in air prior to hitting surface) you may try some floetrol additive.

I'm definitely getting all the air out. It could be the PSI. It doesn't have a gauge or anything, and it's about 3 full turns to open or close so it's pretty hard to gauge it. I just went until the tails went away and a touch more. I'll check the manual for those things and see what it says. If I wanted to install a pressure gauge, is that even possible after market?

Appreciate the help!

Is the trim primed or unprimed mdf. If you are using a waterbase coating on unprimed mdf the face could be raising. If it is unprimed I would prime it with a good quality oil primer before touching it with anything else. You could be applying to thick or to thin also the area might not be clean enough if you didn't thoroughly clean the area near where you are spraying.

It's a repaint- I'm dusting the board and the paper. Now I've got some spots that are perfect - smooth as glass, couldn't be happier, but then a foot away it goes rough again. I've tried going slower, messing with the pressure... The bubbles have stopped, looks like that was a distance thing maybe. Would tip size have something to do with this?

Yeah. RAC X 310 fine finish. Id rather be using a 410, but none of the stores around here have one in stock. Not that that really matters. So if it is my speed, about how many seconds should it take to do a longwise pass on a door with latex paint in a 310 tip? I think I'm doing it in about 3 seconds right now and having to do 2 coats.

Another thing to with semi gloss paint is you need to make sure that the gun is perpendicular to the surface and that you are getting really even coverage. It sounds like you might be getting a good 3 feet of spray and then turning the sprayer and misting areas.

Yeah- so I switched to a 311 RAC X and that made a lot of difference. Even the guys at the paint store had different opinions there though, luckily a guy who does finish work overheard and said to use the 311 and gave some pointers. Another thing that helped was wiping it all down with a dry cloth (after its dry) to get all that dust off. Letting it dry more slowly helped as well. I noticed that if I tried to speed it up by shining my lights on a fresh section, it'd turn out rough.

Anyways, very happy with how it all turned out. Learned a lot about spraying trim and tricks to masking huge houses quickly. Appreciate all the help I got. Peace all
