Nail gun for tongue and groove siding ?

Hey guys.

I have a job where we are installing tongue and groove vertical cedar siding.

I have couple of Hitachi nailers with Stainless Steel nails but I think we need one specially design for tongue and groove siding. I don't want to face nail it and going even with small heads is not that easy.

If you have any idea please let me know.

This was done with a 16 gauge Paslode in 1993 or 94. 2" Stainless nails.

It's all blind nailed and it's all still on there. Once you get the feel of the gun, the nails are easily placed where you want them.

It would help to know what you are fastening to. Hope you've got a rain screen. How wide are the boards? Anything over 1x4 I would face nail. I would go with a stainless staple before I used a finish nail.

It is a new construction. Cedar T&G Vertical siding 1x6 - going into 1/2" plywood.

I am using Hitachi NV65AH with 2" stainless steel ribbed nails

I want to stay away with finish nailer as finish nails might not hold well. I would love to get gun with nose for T&G.

it's not so much the nails but what your nailing into,always try to remember this,if your nailing direct to osb you may need to reconsider your fastener,even ringshanks will loosen up just in osb

try a few test boards,see what holds better,i find with the staples you basically need to destroy the tongue to remove it,i keep my staples no more than 12'' apart

Have you checked your siding manufacturer's specified nailing requirements? I've found alot of redwood/cedar sidings require face nailing with full round head SS nails otherwise you'll be **** outa luck with any warranty claims. If blind nailing's OK I've had good luck with both SS staples and SS finish nails, both 15 or 16 gauge(I've finally been able to find a source for SS paslode angled 16 gauge nails)

Thisiscarpentry.com has the review. It's a good gun/nose I would definitely get the nose for your gun. Sound negatives though.

A friend of mine was using a flooring cleat nailer to hang bead board on a porch ceiling. It's exterior, but not exposed to weather - and I'm not sure they make ss or hdg fasteners for them. You've got to get the right shoe for the material thickness too. I think it took cleats or staples.

Not sure if you could get away with that on siding though.

That NV65 is a bad mamma jamma btw :D

Tom, what gun do you use to shoot the staples?
