My company is doing an extensive remodel turning a contemporary 1978 house into a Craftsman Bungalow. We essentially built a Craftsman over the old house incorporating the old house into the new design. The original plans called for a full return along the very long (48') side wall of the house. The owners then decided to add an upstairs apartment and felt that the steps would interfere with the full return and wanted to do gable returns instead. The question, is how long should the returns be? The architect says between 4' and 6'. We're thinking 2' and the homeowner can't decide. The soffits are 24". Any ideas?

48" seems to be the best look. The wall is huge, but there will be a staircase to the apartment upstairs to break it up. Interesting renovation. We've never "eaten" a house before! LOL! Thanks, all!

FYI. It went from 1750 sqft to 6000. The owner's famous last words were "What's 2 more feet?"
