And as far as getting some icy cold beers for a job well done I would never drink before during or after a job is complete onsite.
I was not suggesting drinking on the job.......I was mearly suggesting that over the years I have made plenty of other contractor friends (who have bought me a beer or two at the appropriate place and time)....by being a responsible and caring contractor myself.

circular saw? WTF?

At the very least, grab the cheap $8 diamond hole saw from a local Home Crappo, and use that to trim the tile.

I didnt know integral stops were standard everywhere but Virginia... It's not a pointless thing, it's a great time saver when one has to swap out the cartridge.

This whole thing is just wrong. It's the plumbers fault for bringing modern plumbing to Eastern Virginia. Everything would be OK if he didn't get the new fangled plumbing whacha macallit with those fancy stopper jobbies. They don't need those New York city valves. No sir!

Ok of coarse im going to go fix it but as far as making a mistake i think not. In eastern virginia i have never seen these valves and i have done hundreds of showers. I just hope my circular saw will cut the tile. Also i think these valves are pointless. And as far as getting some icy cold beers for a job well done I would never drink before during or after a job is complete onsite.
Funny that because I'm in Virginia and see them all time! ESP on higher end valves. All you need to do is drill a couple of holes right where the shutoffs are so that they can be got at when the cover is removed.

The valves control water temp. The plumber must be able to access in able to set hot water max temp to local code. My brother in-law is a journey man plumber, I have followed him many times and had to call him about many "new" rough in kits from various manufacturers. Fix it for the plumber and in the future you should pic all rough in kits then goggle for specs. When you find a lemon find a friend with vodka and have a party. Good luck

Angus I think we still need some more hashing out here.

Everyone should be clear that those integral stops are not design to balance out the water temperature and as mentioned there are little plastic stops for this.

While we are talking about plumbing rough in's it should be mentioned that when you bring the plumber in tell him to read the instructions. I can not tell you how many times you get a line like,

"Must be some debris in the line that jammed the cartridge"

In the instructions these rough ins all say something like

"Insure the cartridge is removed and the lines are flushed before installing."

This point holds true with toilets, faucets and such.

Make the plumber flush the lines are tell him he can re and re the cartridges on his own dime if does not.

OK that's it.
