Hey Wild, first and foremost, nice to see superior craftsmanship. My question though relates to the tolerances in your work as far as expansion and contraction. Where I'm located temps range from 35* /105* and there is quite a bit of movement in composites, so much so that my tolerances change with am work vs pm work and all my joints are rounded over with a router. how do your joints hold up in the long haul???

I'm in a similar situation with respect to movement. There's the miter joint on the return but there is also the plank butting into the return. I can't quite tell if that joint is tight or slightly gapped for expansion / contraction.

Thanks for all the compliments there guys!

The outside of the stringer and the kicks are covered in Azek rim cover. I lay the rim cover on and flush trim router it to the stringer, makes it super fast and a tight fit.

As to attachment, the board are riddled with face screws and Cortex plugs. We make sure to line up the grains so that they disappear.

As for expansion and contraction, this stuff does move! I measured 1/4" of movement and I'm sure it could go more. Depending on the climate installation would have to vary.

In my case I control the joint with face screws, screws through the miter, and glue in the joint. I also let the board have a bit more slack away from the miter to allow it some place to go if it does decide it's moving.

Wild Will....Think I like yours better.

These were glued and pocket screwed.

I like the idea of pocket screws, i was going to do that on mine but the glue was so strong I just said heck with it. If they ever open up on me that will be my next step.

I like the look you got going there, it gives the end of the step a little detail.
