Hello, new to this forum, need some help please

I dont work in the city much... helping a buddy out with a backyard makeover (fence, deck & pergola).

I redid the fence, mounting the new 6x6 posts to the old steel ones that were already poured into the ground. They required more room through the gate for a new snowblower, so i had to scrap the steel posts against the house and now i have a gate closing onto the side of the house (stucco) I made a wood block and fastened the gate latch to it and attempted to fasten in to the building but no luck. The sheathing is junk and there are no studs so my screws just spun out. What should I do? How do you fasten to stucco? concrete screws? My first thought was make a steel band 17" wide to catch two studs, and weld an 'ear' onto it to mount the latch hardware. Wouldnt look the best but its somewhat out of sight... what are your thoughts?

not sure from your description if the gate is hanging off the house or off a post and closing onto a latch which is on the house.
tapcons will work if there's not much weight on them. if the gate is attached to the house then go with wing-its. they're strong as hell.

Think of Stucco as being as structural as drywall. It's pretty thin 3/8" - 3/4" depending on the type of installation. There is probably sheathing under the stucco which could be styrofoam, fiberboard, or plywood. If the sheathing is styrofoam you may be screwed. You are at the location of a hollow wall (cavity) so you will need a hollow wall anchor. The stucco just won't hold a gate latch. If the sheathing won't support a hollow wall anchor, you may need to block between studs. Proper blocking will require the removal of either some of the stucco/sheathing or sheetrock from the inside.

There are several types of hollow wall anchors that will work. Find one that is appropriate for the installation you are doing. Consider not only the weight load but the impact loading of the gate closing.
